In this oral history (conducted in Spanish) Carlos Gutiérrez Sr. discusses his experiences as a soccer coach in the Central Valley. Since his childhood in Michoacán, Mexico, he liked futbol. He arrived to the United States and started playing in Liga California in Los Angeles during the 1980s. His kids, began playing in the league in the 1990s. He was always their coach. He moved to Visalia and stared coaching in different leagues and ages around the 2000s. Some of the leagues include Liga de Visalia, la liga US Club, and his teams also played in various tournaments throughout the Central Valley. Most of his players’ parents worked in the fields and were unable to attend the games. Mr. Gutiérrez would often be in charge of picking up and taking his players to the games. He also had to work and began selling futbol uniforms at the swapmeets. His passion for futbol motivated him to coach.
Special note: Mr. Gutiérrez is Carls Gutierrez’s father. Carlos was a student in Dr. Guzmán’s futbol course and also played on The Other Football’s soccer teams. In fact, Mr. Gutiérrez made the very first shirts for The Other Football team and project: Red shirts with white font that reads “Historia Publica”
